Menu for 7/22/13-7/28/13

Tonight was supposed to be big sandwich night, but I made this really awesome new bread (recipe sometime next month) and it wasn't conducive to big sandwich so we sliced it up and had little sandwiches instead.  I was especially excited about this bread because I have been eyeing the recipe for almost a year, but never had an occasion to try it.  It's Challah bread.  I've only ever had it once before.  If I remember correctly my Aunt brought it to our Thanksgiving gathering one year.

It's a really sturdy bread.  It's a bit sweet and has an eggy, buttery flavor.  The presentation is also stunning.  It's one of those breads that is braided and then brushed with egg wash so it comes out all pretty and glossy brown.  Anyway, I was quite proud that my first attempt turned out so well.  We ate the whole loaf among the four of us (I'm not counting Bailey since she disassembled her sandwich and threw the turkey on the floor before I stole the rest from her and ate it myself) and my brother probably would have eaten more had there been any left.

We hardly ever eat out, but today for lunch we decided to go to Sonic and try those pretzel hot dogs they've been advertising.  Last week I ordered a pretzel bacon cheeseburger at Wendy's and that pretzel bun was so good I just couldn't resist the Sonic hot dog.  Something about the pretzel bun brings out the flavors of the burger and the dog both.  I thought it might be heavy but it's soft and light and makes a perfect pairing with hamburgers and hot dogs.  I was so impressed that I'm currently searching for a recipe for a pretzel bun.  I want to recreate it at home.

As we're nearing the end of the month I'm starting to feel anxious about next month's menu.  I haven't managed to get it together yet and for me this is late.  I think I have finally chosen our new recipes, one of which is actually not new to me.  It's one of Mom's recipes that Aaron has never had before.  We're definitely looking at a roast pork recipe that I'm hoping will make good sandwiches as leftovers, and probably a Pioneer Woman recipe I found on Pinterest.  I can't decide whether our fourth new recipe should be a stove top version of the crock pot Italian chicken and veggies (with chicken thighs instead of breasts which should be quite tasty) or chicken Alfredo roll-ups with a new Alfredo recipe.  I know Aaron will like the Alfredo roll-ups, but they sound so heavy and I was hoping for something a bit lighter but still hearty.  I'm contradicting myself, I know.  It's just a tough decision for me, especially since I'm the one who had to narrow it down from the 350+ recipes on my Pinterest board.  It feels like choosing between the two is a chore and I'm being the spoiled brat who doesn't wanna do it.

I'll get over it.  Maybe this week's meals will inspire me to choose.  Here's what we're having.
