Menu for 4/14/14-4/20/14

Yesterday we celebrated Aaron's mother's birthday with a delicious beef roast (cooked in the crock pot the way my mom makes it) and a three layer Neapolitan cake.

Of course roast beef is never complete without mashed potatoes and gravy, peas, and dinner rolls. I made a 3+ lb roast and it fed 8 very hungry people. Between Aaron and myself, his parents, his sister, and her three kids (11, 13, and 15 years old) we demolished the roast. There was barely enough left for a sandwich.

Then we moved on to cake. I did my very best to answer the request of Aaron's mom and his nephew (whose birthday was a week ago) and made a Neapolitan cake. Chocolate cake topped with chocolate fudge frosting topped with strawberry cake and strawberry butter cream and finally a vanilla cake with vanilla frosting on top.

The piping wasn't all that great and between the crumbling vanilla cake layer and the melting strawberry butter cream the cake was literally falling apart by the time we cut it, but it tasted lovely. I guess next time I need to work on leveling the layers better.

It was a fun night overall. Bailey spent the evening playing rambunctiously with her cousins which was a joy to watch.

On a totally different note I picked up a new book this weekend. Since I finished reading The Hunger Games last week I decided I would give Divergent a try. I'm probably 9-10 chapters in and so far I'm enjoying it. I guess I'll know in a day or two if I should go ahead and buy the other books in the series.
